KSOU VC MEETS FOR UGC DERECOGNITION

KSOU VC MEETS UGC AUTHORITIES

Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) vice-chancellor M G Krishnan on Monday met key UGC officials in New Delhi and discussed the situation arising out latter's derecognition of courses offered by the open university.

The meeting comes days after the varsity decided to restrict itself to Karnataka, and stop admission of students outside the state. It was one of the key objections by the UGC to KSOU, which pushed it to derecognize the courses after 2012-13.

Krishnan flew to New Delhi and held discussions with UGC officials. When contacted, the VC confirmed the meeting with UGC officials, but didn't share the details. He indicated that he discussed the issue of extending recognition to the courses. Krishnan said that he will speak about it on Tuesday, when he returns to Mysure.

The Board of Management, the apex body of the higher education institution, had on Friday decided to seek renewal of recognition with retrospective effect to safeguard the interest of thousands of students who have graduated in the last two academic years.

Meanwhile, governor-chancellor Vajubhai Vala has reportedly taken serious view of the varsity authorities questioning the UGC. In the aftermath of the controversy following the June 16 public notice by the UGC, the varsity officials had questioned former, and indicated that it could be targeting KSOU. "The governor has taken note of it seriously," sources stated.
