BHU Top 10 rank in India on scale of 'Best Global Universities'

"Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Got Top 10 rank in India on scale of 'Best Global Universities"


Banaras Hindu University (BHU) ranks 10th in the country in the list of overall 'Best Global Universities' ranking of a US agency - US News Education World. However, the global ranking of BHU is 625th, while it stands at 123rd among Asian universities. Harvard University in the US ranks first globally, while Japan's University of Tokyo is on the top in Asian countries.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has been placed on the top among the top-10 academic institutions in India followed by Panjab University, Chandigarh (2nd), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (3rd), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (4th), Indian Institute of Technology Madras (5th), Aligarh Muslim University (6th), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (7th), Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (8th), University of Delhi (9th), and Banaras Hindu University (10th).
Besides, Jadavpur University, Kolkata (11th), Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (12th), University of Hyderabad (13th), and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (14th) also figure in ranking list of Indian institutions of US News Education World.

According to US News Education's website, 12 indicators were used to calculate BHU's overall 'Best Global Universities' rank. The indicators and their weights in the ranking formula include global research reputation (12.5%), regional research reputation (12.5%), publications (10%), books (2.5%), conferences (2.5%), normalized citation impact (10%), total citations (7.5%), number of publications that are among the 10 percent most cited (12.5%), percentage of total publications that are among the 10 percent most cited (10%), international collaboration (10%), number of Ph.D.s awarded (5%), number of Ph.D.s awarded per academic staff member (5%).
In May last year BHU was also on top among the three Indian universities which managed to enter the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015 - Chemistry. According to the head of the department of Chemistry Prof V B Singh, the 'QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015', published recently, highlighted the world's top universities in 36 individual subjects, based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. In the subject of Chemistry, three Indian universities, apart from the IITs, were able to make an entry into the list. BHU topped the list followed by Delhi University and University of Hyderabad in the order.
According to BHU spokesperson, Rajesh Singh, the university spread in an area of 1300 acres has a student strength of over 29000 with 134 departments and five institutes. Another campus of the university at Barkachha , in Mirzapur district, is spread in an area of 2700 acres. It is the largest residential university in India.
