COMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST (CLAT)

CLAT 2016 is an online (computer based) assesment directed for admission to national law schools in India.This exam is a golden pass for law aspirants who wish to enter the field of legal studies  and explore law as a career option surrounded by the country's best legal and scholarly minds. This assesment is managed jointly by 16 national law schools in India and is used for admission to under graduate (B.A/B.Sc/ BBA/ B.Com LL.B (Hons) and post graduate course (LL.M) law courses.

Undergraduate Programmes offered by National Law Universities in India:-

 

The sixteen NLUs mentioned above offer a number of five-year integrated under-graduate law courses leading to B.A. LL.B., B.Sc. LL.B., B.B.A. LL.B., B.S.W. LL.B., B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) degrees. While B.A. LL.B. is offered by most of the universities, B.Sc. LL.B. Course is offered by WBNUJS (Kolkata), NLU (Jodhpur) and GNLU (Gandhinagar). B.B.A. LL.B. is offered by NLU (Jodhpur), GNLU (Gandhinagar), CNLU (Patna) and NLUO (Cuttack); whereas B.S.W. LL.B. and B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) degree courses are offered by GNLU (Gandhinagar) alone.

 

Eligibility for CLAT UG programmes:-

 

Age Limit:-

A candidate should be below 20 years of age as on 1st July, 2015 (22 years in case of SC/ST and Persons with Disability candidates, as prescribed by the respective Statutes of the participating Universities.

Educational Qualification:-

A candidate should have obtained Higher Secondary School/ Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent certificate from a recognized Board with not less than 45% marks in aggregate (40% in case of SC and ST candidates), as prescribed by the respective Statutes of the participating Universities.


Postgraduate Programmes offered by National Law Universities in India:-

 

The information of the LL.M. degree course offered at the various NLUs with the duration and the specializations have been provided in detail under the sections of each University. Candidates are advised to check the websites of respective Universities from time to time to keep themselves updated about the changes in the course structure and other details.

 

Eligibility for CLAT PG programmes:- 

 

Age Limit:-  The participating Universities have not prescribed any upper age limit for PG Programmes.

Educational Qualification:-

A candidate should have obtained an LL.B./a five year integrated LL.B./any other equivalent degree from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks in aggregate (50% in case of SC/ST candidates), as prescribed by the respective Statutes of the participating Universities.

The result of qualifying examination shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of admission failing which the candidate shall be ineligible for admission to the Course.

CLAT Registration / Application Form

CLAT 2015 Online Application Form / Registration:-

There is only one mode of application i.e. online which can be accessed by a candidate after registering himself/herself on the CLAT website by creating a LOGIN ACCOUNT. The Online Application Form can be submitted only between 1st January, 2015 and 31st March, 2015 (11:59 p.m.).

Documents To Be Uploaded during Online Application:-

The scanned copies of the documents to be uploaded in the PDF/jpg format by all the candidates are:

        

• Birth Certificate
• Standard X Marksheet
• Qualifying Examination Marksheet/Certificate such as 10+2 or its equivalent examination certificate from a recognized Board (for UG Courses).
• Qualifying Examination Marksheet/Certificate such as LL.B. or its equivalent examination certificate from a recognized University (for PG Courses).
• Passport size photograph (3.5 cms x 4.5 cms) [JPG Format, SIZE 100 KB]
• Signature of candidate [JPG Format, SIZE 100 KB]

The scanned copies of the documents to be uploaded in the PDF format by a candidate depending on the applicability are:

 

• Category Certificate (SC/ST/OBC)
• Disability Certificate (Persons With Disability, P.W.D.)
• Special Category certificate like E.B.C.; B.C.; W.B.C.; D.F.F.; S.E.B.C.; Ancestral residents of village Sidhuwal, District Patiala; Son / Daughter of Defense Personnel Deployed in U.P. or Defense Personnel of U.P. either retired or killed/ disabled in action; Dependant of Freedom Fighter of U.P. and Kashmiri Migrant.
• Certificates in support of One’s Claim for NRI/NRI Sponsored Candidate.
• Domicile Certificate in support of one’s claim for consideration under State Quota

No copies of the filled in Online Application Form or uploaded certificates/documents need to be sent to the CLAT Office.

CLAT 2015 Fees:-

For Unreserved/OBC/PWD and other category candidates: Rs. 4000/-

For SC/ST category candidates: Rs. 3500/-

The candidates will have to bear the bank transaction charges for remitting the fee online.

The above application fee includes cost of online application form and e-brochure.

Counseling Fee after the declaration of results:

Rs. 50,000 (excluding the bank charges or additional transaction costs for remitting the fees online).

Previous year Question papers of CLAT shall be available on the payment of Rs. 250/- in e-form only.

Mode of Fee Payment:-

The online payment can be made through net-banking, debit card, credit card etc. wherein the candidate will have to bear the additional transaction charges for remitting the fees through payment gateways.

For paying the fees offline through website, the candidate will have to download the ‘Bank Challan‘ that will be generated with the required information, as filled in by the candidate, and make the payment with additional bank charges at any branch of the ICICI Bank. After making the requisite payment at the bank, the candidate needs to fill-in the details of the Bank Challan as required at the relevant section of application form on the website.

CLAT Syllabus 2016:-

 

CLAT 2016 UG Syllabus :-

English including comprehension:-

The English section will test the candidates’ proficiency in English based on comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates will be questioned on their understanding of the passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein etc. The grammar section requires correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.

General Knowledge and Currents Affairs:-

As far as general knowledge is concerned, the candidates will be tested on their general awareness including static general knowledge. Questions on current affairs will test candidates on their knowledge of current affairs (broadly defined as matters featuring in the mainstream media between March 2014 and April 2015)

Mathematics:-

This section will test candidate’s knowledge on elementary mathematics, i.e. maths taught up to Class X.

Legal Aptitude:-

This section will test candidate’s interest towards study of law, research aptitude and problem solving ability. Questions will be framed with the help of legal propositions (described in the paper), and a set of facts to which the said proposition has to be applied. Some propositions may not be “true” in the real sense (e.g. the legal proposition may be that any person who speaks in a movie hall and disturbs others that are watching the movie will be banned from entering any movie theatre across India for one year). Candidates will have to assume the “truth” of these propositions and answer the questions accordingly.

Logical Reasoning:-

The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the candidate’s ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. It will include a wide variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. However, visual reasoning will not be tested.

Total Marks - 200

Number of multiple-choice questions of one mark each - 200

Duration of Examination- Two hours (02:00 hours)

Subject areas with Weightage

English including Comprehension - 40 Marks
General Knowledge and Current Affairs - 50 Marks
Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) - 20 Marks
Legal Aptitude - 50 Marks
Logical Reasoning - 40 Marks

There shall be a system of Negative Marking wherein 0.25 marks will be deducted for each of the wrong answer.

Pattern of CLAT 2016 (Post-Graduate Programme)

Maximum Marks - 150

Duration of Examination - Two hours (02:00 hours)

Multiple-Choice Questions - 150 questions of one mark each

Allocation of questions to be asked from different areas of law:-

1. Constitutional Law – 50
2. Jurisprudence – 50
3. Other law subjects such as Contract, Torts, Criminal Law, etc. – 50
